May 10, 2026 | Benin City, Edo State

A part-time student of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) has been shot dead inside his vehicle at the institution's main gate in Benin City, Edo State, on Sunday, May 10, 2026.. the same day he is believed to have concluded his semester examinations.

The victim, a student of the Department of Political Science, was found slumped in the driver's seat of a grey Mercedes SUV bearing Lagos plate number AAA-****, with multiple gunshot wounds to the head and face. The windshield of the vehicle was shattered, with bullet holes visible across the body of the car.

The attack occurred at the Ugbowo campus main gate  one of the busiest entry and exit points of the university — in what witnesses described as a swift and targeted assault. Graphic video footage of the scene, shared on X (formerly Twitter) by user name withheld, shows a crowd gathered around the bullet-riddled vehicle, with bystanders filming as the victim remained slumped inside.

The timing of the attack has drawn particular attention. According to information reaching ILGM, the victim had just concluded his part-time programme examinations earlier in the day, raising questions about whether he was being monitored or followed ahead of the shooting.

The victim's full identity has not been officially confirmed at the time of this report. It remains unclear whether the attack was cult-related, a targeted assassination, or connected to any ongoing dispute. No arrests have been made, and neither the UNIBEN management nor the Edo State Police Command has issued an official statement as of press time.

The incident has triggered panic across the university community, with students and staff expressing shock on social media over the brazen nature of the attack at one of the campus's most visible and populated locations.

ILGM will continue to monitor this developing story and will provide updates as more details emerge.
