Dakar 2026 Set to Make History as First Olympic Event on African Soil, With Just 200 Days to Go

Dakar, Senegal, is preparing to host the 2026 Summer Youth Olympic Games from 31 October to 13 November 2026, marking a landmark moment as the first-ever Olympic-branded sports event to be held on the African continent. The Games will bring together approximately 2,700 young athletes aged 15 to 18 from around the world to compete in around 153 events across 25 sports, blending high-level competition with cultural exchange, education, and youth empowerment programmes. Under the motto “Africa welcomes, Dakar celebrates,” the event is expected to showcase Senegalese hospitality (Teranga) and serve as a catalyst for sporting, social, and economic development across the region, with venues in Dakar, Diamniadio, and Saly.

This historic milestone comes after the original 2022 dates were postponed due to the global pandemic, giving Senegal and the African Olympic movement more time to build infrastructure and legacy projects. It will also be the first Youth Olympic Games under the presidency of Kirsty Coventry, the IOC’s first African leader. The Games go beyond medals to emphasise values such as innovation, sustainability, and dialogue between young people from different backgrounds, with a strong focus on leaving a lasting positive impact for African youth in sport and beyond.

With roughly 200 days remaining until the Opening Ceremony on 31 October 2026, excitement is building rapidly across the continent and globally. African National Olympic Committees, athletes, and fans are mobilising, viewing Dakar 2026 not just as a sporting festival but as a powerful symbol of Africa’s growing role on the international stage, a stepping stone that many hope will pave the way for future senior Olympic hosting ambitions on the continent.

This countdown represents far more than a calendar milestone; it signals a new chapter where African talent, culture, and dreams take centre stage in the Olympic family. As preparations intensify, the world will be watching to see how Dakar delivers an unforgettable celebration of youth, sport, and African pride.
