National Assembly Elections Petition Tribunal Orders Election Rerun in Eti Osa Federal Constituency
The National Assembly Elections Petition Tribunal, sitting in Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos State, has issued a landmark ruling invalidating the election victory of Thaddeus Atta from the Labour Party as the duly elected representative for Eti Osa Federal Constituency.
In a late-night judgment delivered on Monday, the tribunal declared the elections inconclusive, prompting the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a supplementary election within 90 days in all polling units where voting did not take place.
This decision comes in response to petitions filed by Nigerian singer and actor, Bankole Wellington, popularly known as Banky W, of the Peoples Democratic Party, and the All Progressives Congress candidate, Ibrahim Babajide Obanikoro, challenging the election results.
The initial results had declared Thaddeus Atta the winner with 24,075 votes, while Banky W and Obanikoro polled 18,668 and 16,901 votes, respectively.
Ibrahim Obanikoro, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, expressed his satisfaction with the tribunal's decision, stating, "It was all smiles at the tribunal court when it was confirmed that there would be a supplementary election in several polling units under the Eti-Osa Federal constituency where the election did not take place. I believe that our justice system is on the right track, and I praise the judges for this ruling, which adheres to the components of the Constitution. Work starts now."
Thaddeus Atta, in a statement shared on his social media platform, clarified that he was not sacked but that the tribunal had ordered a re-run (supplementary election) in the 32 polling units where elections did not hold. He reassured constituents, saying, "We will continue working for Eti-osa. I urge constituents to keep calm as we are unshaken. We will get through this together."
Banky W, who also contested the election, shared his optimism by writing, "It is possible. Still," on his X verified social media handle.
This development marks a significant turn in the Eti Osa Federal Constituency election saga, as the electoral process in these affected polling units is set to be revisited. All stakeholders, including the candidates and the electorate, are urged to maintain peace and cooperate with INEC to ensure a smooth and transparent supplementary election process.
The tribunal's decision reflects the commitment to upholding the principles of democracy and the rule of law in Nigeria. As the supplementary election date approaches, all parties involved are encouraged to adhere to electoral regulations and foster a peaceful and fair voting process.
