Yes, that's correct. South African healthtech startup Kena Health has closed $2m in seed extension funding from Next176, a subsidiary of Old Mutual, and a further $100,000 from the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Foundry.
Kena Health is a virtual healthcare company that provides primary care services to patients through a combination of video consultations, remote patient monitoring, and home delivery of medication. The company was founded in 2019 by Dr. Carel Nolte and Dr. Kurt Wium, two UCT alumni who were frustrated with the lack of access to quality healthcare in South Africa.
The latest funding will be used to expand Kena Health’s services to more patients and to develop new products and services. Kena Health is currently available in Johannesburg and Cape Town, but the company plans to expand to other parts of South Africa in the near future.
The funding round was led by Next176, a venture capital firm that invests in early-stage technology companies in Africa. Next176 was impressed with Kena Health’s team, its technology, and its potential to disrupt the healthcare industry in Africa.
“We are excited to partner with Kena Health to help them build the future of healthcare in Africa,” said David Ntsaluba, Managing Partner at Next176. “Kena Health has the potential to revolutionize the way healthcare is delivered in Africa by making it more accessible, affordable, and convenient.”
Kena Health is one of a number of healthtech startups that are emerging in Africa. These startups are using technology to address the challenges of providing healthcare in Africa, such as the lack of access to healthcare providers, the high cost of healthcare, and the shortage of healthcare workers.
