Nigeria U20 Stun Host Argentina 2-0 to Reach U20 World Cup Quarterfinals

The Nigeria U20 team has provided the major upset of the ongoing U20 World Cup by beating the tournament host Argentina 2-0 in the round of 16. The match was played on Wednesday, May 31, 2023, at the Estadio San Juan del Bicentenario stadium in San Juan, Argentina.

Argentina started the game on the front foot, but Nigeria defended well and kept the Argentines from creating any clear-cut chances. The first half ended goalless.

In the second half, Nigeria took the lead in the 61st minute through Ibrahim Mohammed Beji. Beji scored from close range after Emmanuel Umeh's cross was deflected into his path.

Argentina pushed for an equaliser, but Nigeria held on and sealed the win in the 90th minute. Haliru Sarki scored from close range after Victor Eletu's cross was headed into his path.

The win means that Nigeria will face the winner of the match between Uruguay and France in the quarter-finals.

The result is a major upset for Argentina, who were the favourites to win the tournament. The hosts had won all of their group matches and had not conceded a single goal.

However, Nigeria were well-organised and disciplined in defence, and they were clinical in attack. They created a number of chances and could have scored more goals.
