HIGH CHIEF RAYMOND DOKPESI, FOUNDER OF DAAR COMMUNICATIONS, DIES AT 71

 Raymond Dokpesi, the founder and chairman of DAAR Communications, died on Monday, May 29, 2023, at the age of 71. Dokpesi was a pioneer in the Nigerian media industry, and his company DAAR Communications was one of the first private television stations in Nigeria. 

Dokpesi was born in 1952 in Ibadan, Nigeria. He did his undergraduate studies in the University of Benin, and he worked as a lawyer before entering the media industry. In 1993, he founded DAAR Communications, and the company launched its first television station, African Independent Television (AIT), in 1995. AIT quickly became one of the most popular television stations in Nigeria, and it was known for its critical coverage of the government.

Dokpesi was also a political figure, and he was a strong supporter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He was a member of the PDP's Board of Trustees, and he served as the party's chairman in the South-South region. Dokpesi was also a close friend of former President Goodluck Jonathan, and he was accused of using his media company to support Jonathan's political campaigns.

In 2016, Dokpesi was arrested and charged with money laundering. He was accused of using his media company to launder money for Jonathan's political campaigns.

Dokpesi was a controversial figure, but he was also a pioneer in the Nigerian media industry. He was a strong advocate for press freedom, and he helped to make AIT one of the most popular television stations in Nigeria. Dokpesi's death is a loss for the Nigerian media industry, and he will be remembered as a trailblazer who helped to shape the Nigerian media landscape.
